Whether you’re just starting as an Official or are experienced and looking to advance, there are qualifications available for everyone at a range of levels.
There are 2 parts to the official’s course:
- A written exam
- Probationary Period

Certificates will be released via England Boxing on the Locker profiles
Anyone aged 16 or over can book onto the officials course.
Judge/Timekeeper
The judge/timekeeper and Referee courses are all held over 1 and a half days.
The first day includes going through the presentation in the classroom. On the second day, they must complete practical application and then complete the written exam.
Grade C
To become a Grade C, contact the England Boxing and then England Boxing will make the Regional Educator aware of the interest.
Grade B
To become a Grade B judge, you require a minimum of a year of experience as a Grade C, and 100 judged bouts, which can be evidenced on the Locker.
Grade A
To become a Grade A judge, you need to have been a Grade B for a minimum of a year and judged 100 bouts; 50% must be at Regional Level plus Officials Educator Recommendation.
Referee
The judge/timekeeper and Referee courses are all held over 1 and a half days.

Grade C
To become a grade C, from a Grade C Judge, you have to have a minimum of 1 year as a Grade C Judge and 100 bouts, which can be uploaded onto the Locker.
Grade B
Minimum 1 year and 100 refereed bouts. Referee has to keep a logbook of all the bouts as evidence, this will be on the Locker.
Grade A
Minimum of 1 year and 100 refereed bouts; 25% must be at regional level plus Regional Recommendation by the Officials Educator.
Supervisor
Grade C
From Judge Grade C to Grade C Supervisor, minimum 1 year and 100 judged bouts. Must be recommended by the regional Officials Educator and undertake 10 appointments as Asst Supervisor before written exam and oral exam/interview.
Grade B
Minimum 10 Supervisor Appts and a further 5 as Asst Supervisor at Regional Level.
Grade A
10 Supervisor Appointments; 5 at Regional Level. Regional recommendation by the Officials Educator. Complete the EB Viva Voce Process
Officials can apply directly to the technical rules and official’s subcommittee if they feel the regional support is unfair. In such circumstances, an independent assessment is arranged in a neighbouring region.
Officials may be fast tracked at any given point, this will be dependent on a recommendation from a senior official, and an independent assessment arranged by the Technical Rules and Officials Sub Committee.
Upgrades
Upgrades can be completed through the regional educator and will be organised through the educator for the region as to what show/event or course the upgrade will be completed on.
Officials Logbook
Officials’ logbooks will now be stored digitally on each member’s profile. Supervisors and Ringside Recorders will be able to update logbooks as officiating experience is gained. Previous logbooks should be uploaded as a photo, and from 1st February, all new experience must be recorded digitally. Members may be asked to present their digital logbook to an Officials Educator when required. Supervisors and Ringside Recorders can refer to the Step by Step Guide for how to complete the logbook.
UK Armed Forces
The UK Armed Forces (UKAF) conduct their officials courses independently from England Boxing. While the course structure differs, UKAF will continue delivering these courses as the established process following EB procedures. UKAF members who choose to attend a civilian course must follow the standard civilian course procedures. UKAF courses will be designated as closed courses on The Locker, ensuring exclusive access for UKAF members to book their course.
