There was victory for England Boxing’s Northwest Region as they recently brought home ten medals from the Salabank Box Open Tournament in Heby, Sweden.
The event ran from 13th-14th March and resulted in eight gold medals being won, along with one silver and a bronze.
Teenager Tyree Holden impressively fought against two National Swedish Champions in order to make it to the final and eventually strike gold.
Upon winning he said: “It is one of the best weekends I’ve ever had in boxing, we are grateful to Alan, Steve, and the rest of the coaching team for providing this amazing opportunity.”
Further accolades were also achieved as the squad took the title of “Best Team”, Holden secured “Best Youth of the Competition” and TJ Phair gained “Best Senior Boxer”.
During the trip, the team managed to brush shoulders with Swedish royalty as King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia visited Salabank (where the squad stayed) to celebrate its 400th anniversary. It has proven to be a memorable trip for all involved.
Looking to the future, Head Regional Coach, Alan Smith said, “I am immensely proud of each boxer who represented the Northwest region. They made us proud, and their dedication and hard work paid off. Moments like these make my role as head regional coach truly fulfilling.
Looking ahead, our next plans include traveling to Ireland on the 24th of May and returning to Sweden on the 27th of September. We are excited about the upcoming tournaments and the opportunities they bring.”
