England Boxing has secured £17,000 to roll out the ‘Coaching People with Parkinson’s’ course, thanks to the invaluable support of Parkinson’s UK and a generous donation from Richard Longthorp of St Paul’s Boxing Club in Hull.

The funding will enable England Boxing to host eight ‘Coaching People with Parkinson’s’ courses across its regions. Each region will host a course, except Yorkshire, which successfully piloted the initiative in October.

These coaching sessions are specifically designed to include exercises that enhance strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination. With regular attendance, participants can experience reduced muscle stiffness and tremors which has led to improved mobility and independence.

Beyond the physical benefits, the programme has positive effects on mental health. Physical activity promotes the release of endorphins, which can uplift mood and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression – key challenges often faced by people living with Parkinson’s.

“This initiative will equip our coaches with the skills and knowledge to make a real difference in the lives of those living with Parkinson’s,” said Richard Powers, Club and Community Manager at England Boxing.

He added, “These courses are tailored for England Boxing coaches who are passionate about delivering community sessions for people with Parkinson’s.

“By doing so, they can have a positive impact in their local communities and support participants in leading more active and fulfilling lives.”
