An investment of £2,500, along with a similar sum put up the South Wye Boxing Academy itself, has enabled the club to run a holiday programme set to attract 900 visits.  Here’s how its working…

The Fit and Fed Programme

South Wye Boxing Academy in Herfordshire is a hive of activity during this summer holiday period.

The club is running a six-week holiday programme for children aged eight to 16 years of age to encourage an active lifestyle, increase knowledge around healthy eating, and provide a nutritious lunch for every weekday of the school holidays.

The Fit and Fed programme was the brainchild of Head Coach Vince Mcnally and, as the picture below shows, it is proving very popular among local young people.

Getting healthy at lunch

Vince explained the outline of the programme, saying: “The programme runs Monday to Friday throughout the entire six weeks of the school holiday and the young people take part in an hour of fun exercise activities and then sit down in our café for a healthy lunch.

“During lunch we also talk about healthy lifestyle and the important part that healthy food choices plays in maintaining good health.”

The programme has been supported by The Maverick Stars Trust with a grant of £2500 which has helped South Wye deliver it.

No charge to attend

There is no charge for young people to attend and the Academy is on track to have 900 visits across the programme, with the same amount of meals provided during that period.

Midlands Club Support Officer Mick Maguire visited the programme and caught up with West Mercia local police Inspector Greg Tudge who takes charge of The Hereford Safer Neighbourhood Team.

The latter was full of praise for the Fit and Fed programme and the South Wye Boxing Academy in general, saying: “We collaborate closely with South Wye Boxing to support diversionary activities.

Collaboration so important

“We believe the partnership to be of great value and South Wye Boxing is a significant partner for us in the local community. We look forward to working more with the club for the future.”

Just before shooting off to serve lunch to the latest set of youngsters Vince outlined that the project was a success because of the collaborative work going on.

“I would like to thank Maverick Stars for their financial support and also the local police team who are a constant source of aid for us to call on,” he explained.

“Lastly, I would also like to thank Herefordshire Council who have been extremely supportive of this programme and indeed many others which we have successfully delivered in the past.

“Without the assistance of all the partners mentioned we could not continue to deliver these valuable services to our community.”
