Positive start for England at Euro Youths
September 4, 2019 | by Matt Halfpenny
The England got its campaign at the EUBC European Youth Championships 2019 off to a solid start with three wins from four bouts.
First to box in Sofia, Bulgaria was Repton’s Adan Mohammed at 56kg and he secured a convincing unanimous 5-0 victory over Mizan Aykol of Turkey.
His performance was matched in the other bout involving an England boxer of the afternoon session when Pinewood’s Adam Azim won by the same margin at 60kg against Hugo Grau of France.
The first English female, Holly Heffron, kept the Three Lions’ run going as the Heart of Portsmouth boxer put in a powerhouse display to storm to victory by stopping her Turkish opponent, Nur Kubra Dirmikci, in the second round of their 48kg contest.
But it was not to be a clean sweep as Bodyshots’ Jack Oliphant put in a battling effort but was beaten at 69kg by strong Russian contender Dmitry Zakharov, going down 5-0.
The picture shows Ellouise Challenger and Will Hewitt as England’s representatives to carry the England flag at the opening ceremony.
