EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships 2019 – final results

The England team finished well on the last day of competition today with Sacha Hickey and Enriko Itauma becoming European Champions and Shelby-Marie Lee claiming a fantastic silver medal.

The team finish up in fourth place at the event with five medals in total (2 x gold, 1 x silver and 2 x bronze).

 

46kg Shelby-Marie Lee (ENG) v Alena Tremasova (RUS) – lost 2:3

 

Shelby started the round well with good footwork and body movement and when Shelby came forward she threw straight shots to both body and head. When the Russian pressed, Shelby managed to whip in some counters in what was a fairly even first round. In the second Shelby switched to southpaw to match the Russian boxer, Shelby applied good pressure and scored well when in close against the taller Russian. In the last round Shelby forced the pace controlling the ring and forcing her opponent back though the Russian caught Shelby with some good counters towards the end of the round. The split decision went to the Russian leaving Shelby with silver.

 

57kg Alina Pushkar (RUS) v Sacha Hickey (ENG) – won 5:0

 

The start of the round saw Sacha press forward with single shots scoring well to the head of the Russian. As the round went on Sacha grew in confidence and threw some good right-left combinations. In the second round both scored with straight shots, with Sacha countering well with her lead hand hook. The third round was the best one for Sacha, there was a spell where she pushed on and scored solid shots with no reply until the later part of the round. This display earned Sacha the gold medal by a unanimous decision.

 

+80kg Hovahnnes Papazyan (ARM) v Enriko Itauma (ENG) – won 5:0

 

The last bout of the day and the competition was between England’s Enriko and the Armenian. Enriko went to work straight away with a variation of single shots to both head and body of his opponent, dominating the ring. In the second round Enriko let his shots go with good accuracy and power with a three punch combination starting with a lead hand uppercut earned a standing count for the Armenian. The Armenian managed to survive the round. The third round started scrappy, but when Enriko got his range back he pressed hard connecting with solid shots with both hand causing the referee to step in again to award another standing count to the Armenian. Enriko won the bout and Gold by a unanimous points decision.
