The second England Boxing apprentice community event was held at the Sunderland Mind’s Wellbeing Hub yesterday – and was another knockout with local youngsters.

A total of 29 children from across the city attended a half-term camp where Tyne, Tees and Wear apprentice Alys Ball organized a boxing session as part of their experience.

In it, they did warm-up games, learned the basic boxing stance and guard, how to throw a jab and a backhand, padwork and fun circuits.

Alys was assisted by four young boxers from Sunderland East End ABC – sisters Lilly and Ella Lonsdale, Lennox Nixon and Billy Tyrell (pictured below) – while fellow apprentice Madi Gittins, form the Yorkshire region, also lent a hand.

Each attendee received a certificate and a medal to mark the occasion.

Tyne, Tees and Wear Club Support Officer Laura Sargeant, said: “It was a fantastic day and I think the kids who were involved really loved it.

“Organising and delivering an event as a new apprentice is not an easy thing to do, but Alys really got stuck in and did really well.

“I would like to thank the boxers from Sunderland East End who came along to help out – they really got immersed in the day and were brilliant.

“I would also like to thank Sunderland Mind for hosting us at their venue.”
