England duo Ramtin Musah and Joe Tyers got off to winning starts on the opening day of action at the EUBC European Under 22 Championships in Roseto, Italy.

At what was the preliminary stage for the right to advance to the quarter-finals, the Three Lions pair both looked sharp and ready for bigger tests to come.

Beartown’s Musah took on Wales’ Bevan Taylor at Middleweight (Under 75kg) and had to adjust to a taller and rangier opponent.

He gave himself a strong foundation for victory with a unanimous first round success, but his opponent came back well to win three of the judges’ second round verdicts, leaving the contest in the balance.

However, Musah rallied and finished strongly to get the nod on four of the five scorecards in the third round to run out a unanimous winner, much to his obvious delight.

Tyers, of Darlington, looked accomplished in his 4-1 split victory over Sweden’s Hampus Broman at light-welterweight (Under 64kg) in an absorbing contest.

Behind a stiff jab and landing some excellent combinations, .the North-Easterner ended well ahead on three of the judges scorecards and deservedly claimed his last eight berth.

However, there was a defeat for Nico Leivars at Lightweight (Under 60kg) as he went down to home boxer Franceesco Iozia.

There was added spice to the contest by virtue of the fact that Leivars, form the Quarry Lane Boxing Club in Mansfield, had recently switched allegiances from Italy back to the Three Lions.

He lost the first round on all five of the judges’ scorecards and was unable to wrest back control thereafter going down to a unanimous 5-0 decision.

Five of England’s nine-strong team of boxers are in action on today’s second day.

In the afternoon session, Hamza Mehmood faces Ireland’s Sean Mari at Flyweight (Under 52kg) and Shona Whitwell boxes Hungary’s Luca Hmori (Under 64kg).

In the evening, Tyers is back in action against second seed Alexandru Paraschiv of Moldova at light-welterweight (Under 64kg), Conner Tudsbury opens his campaign at light-heavyweight (Under 81kg) against Peter Baranyi of Hungary and Musah also returns to tackle Scotland’s Sam Hickey at middleweight (Under 75kg).
