The Coaching People with Parkinson’s Course is tailored specifically to people living with Parkinson’s and includes exercises designed to improve strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination. Regular participation in this programme can help reduce muscle stiffness and tremors, which are hallmark symptoms of Parkinson’s, leading to improved mobility, greater independence, and a higher quality of life.
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects around 145,000 people in the UK. It occurs when nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine become damaged or die. While there is currently no cure, structured physical activity has been shown to significantly slow the progression of symptoms and improve both motor and non-motor functions.
In addition to physical improvements, these boxing-based programmes provide crucial mental health benefits. Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, helping to lift mood and combat common issues such as anxiety, depression, and social isolation—challenges frequently faced by those with Parkinson’s.
Through this initiative, England Boxing aims to create an inclusive and supportive environment where individuals with Parkinson’s can build strength, confidence, and community through the power of sport.
The course was created in collaboration with Parkinson’s UK through a donation from Richard Longthorp of St Paul’s Boxing Club in Hull.
This funding has allowed England Boxing to deliver 8 courses across its regions, building on a successful pilot that was held in Yorkshire in October 2024.
