Team GB’S Olympic boxers will have to wait for their bid to win Olympic gold after the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were today postponed until next year because of the worldwide Coronavirus Pandemic.

It will be rescheduled for a new date ‘not later than summer 2021’ as stated in official communication on the website of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The Prime Minister of Japan, Mr Shinzo Abe, and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Mr Thomas Bach, held a conference call earlier today (Tuesday), with many of the Japanese and IOC officials joining to the conversations.

They took the decision to postpone the Games taking into account the way the virus has spread across the world, even though Japan’s efforts to stem it have been relatively successful.

The European Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in London was suspended after the third competition on 16th March, with GB’s Peter McGrail (pictured) and Galal Yafai having already successfully qualified for Tokyo.

The Qualifier will continue from day four when possible, with a new date to be announced in due course..
