England Boxing is recruiting for new athletes to join the Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DISE) which kicks off in September 2018.

The Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DISE) is the re-named version of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme, has been run by England Boxing (in conjunction with South Gloucestershire and Stroud College) since 2010, supporting the development of young aspiring boxers. The DISE programme, which combines practical and theoretical aspects of boxing performance, begins in September 2018.

The main purpose of the DISE programme is to support talented athletes to combine sport and education so that they have the skills, knowledge and qualifications to pursue a dual career in high-level sport alongside separate paid employment in the future. It is open to 16-18-year-olds who are aspiring to become elite athletes on England Boxing’s talent pathway. It is aimed at athletes who are enrolled on a study programme at a school/college, as boxers do not have the option of employment, and so cannot enrol on an apprenticeship.

England Boxing, however, continues to support the education of their boxers. Head of Talent and Competitions, David Thorley said, ‘The DiSE programme offers boxers affiliated to England Boxing the opportunity to continue in full-time education.

“Meanwhile, they receive expert coaching with like-minded boxers. Being a DiSE boxer provides the opportunity to be exposed to talent identification for the Talent Pathway Programme. We would highly recommend that boxers attend the DiSE programme Academies for their continued development as both a student and a boxer.’

The DiSE boxing programme also offers the possibility of training for 2 weeks in Tenerife, where the boxers train at altitude up on Mount Teide. The boxers learn Spanish and also coach boxing in Spanish schools using their new found language skills. They train twice a day whilst learning from all of the different DiSE coaches and making friends for life.

A real experience as GB Boxer Raven Chapman recalls, ‘It was a fantastic 2 weeks. It was one of my first real experiences of training abroad and being self-reliant. It put me in great stead for what I’m experiencing now with GB. I can’t recommend DiSE enough to any aspiring young boxer.’

The DISE boxing programme will benefit you as an athlete as you increase your opportunity to train up to 15 hours per week, in combination with the educational course you are following at your school/college. The DISE boxing programme is delivered at six Boxing Academies across the country, where the coaches will assist you in the completion of the Diploma in Sporting Excellence qualification*.

* This qualification is likely to be worth UCAS points, in the same way AASE did. We are awaiting confirmation of the value of those (previously 40 UCAS points, equivalent to an A-Level grade B).
