Youth Euros 2022: Day five – Five England boxers reach semis
April 18, 2022 | by Matt Halfpenny
England have five boxers who are guaranteed at least a bronze medal after winning a quintet of victories from the eight quarter-final bouts contested on day five of the EUBC European Championships 2022 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The Three Lions will have the chance to add to that tally tomorrow when more of their boxers go in the remaining quarter-finals.
England’s day got off to a fantastic as Male Over 92kg boxer Enriko Itauma overpowered Turkish opponent Kaan Tukenmez to win by a first-round stoppage.
Next to go was Scunthorpe’s Ebony Jones at Female Under 50kg, but she went down to a 4-1 split decision defeat to Germany’s Jessica Vollmann.
The Three Lions finished the afternoon session in style, with three more of their boxers progressing.
First, Lauren Mackie, of Burton Park, won her Female Under 52kg bout against Germany’s Steffi Grin by a slender 3-2 margin, then Amber Moss-Birch, of Golden Ring, stopped Bulgaria’s Yelis Ilyazova at Under 75kg.
Female Under 54kg boxer Emily Whitworth, of the People’s Gym, was also in fine form to beat Iryna Melnyk of Ukraine unanimously.
In the evening session Damar Thomas, of Powerday Hooks, was a unanimous victor over Germany’s Arianit Krasniqi to get England back up and running.
Madison Adkins could not keep the run going, however, as she was unfortunate to be on the wrong end of a 3-2 split decision against Ireland’s Laura Moran at Under 70kg after a pulsating bout.
The Three Lions’ final bout of the day paired Under 57kg boxer Paige Howarth, of M31 Boxing, with Germany’s Asya Ari and there was disappointment for the North West boxer as she went down to a unanimous points defeat.
