World Boxing Cup GB Open: Mixed results for English boxers on Day One
January 17, 2024 | by Chris Boyd
England pathway boxers Elise Glynn and Lauren Mackie both earned impressive victories on the opening day of the World Boxing Cup GB Open 2024 in Sheffield.
It wasn’t all one way for the English contingent though, as Sameenah Toussaint, Ivy-Jane Smith and Paris 2024 Olympian Delicious Orie all tasted defeat.
Elise Glynn (West Warwicks) and Sameenah Toussaint (New Kings) got the inaugural GB Open underway at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
As to be expected with two boxers who know one another so well, the bout was highly competitive and provided an exciting start to the competition.
With not much to separate the boxers, the judges ultimately favoured Glynn via a narrow 3-2 split decision.
Delicious Orie (Small Heath) was the next England representative to take to the ring, as he faced Germany’s Nelvie Tiafack in a super-heavyweight clash.
The Olympian ultimately marked his return to action on British soil with a narrow 3-2 split decision defeat against a quality opponent – who won a European gold medal in 2022.
In the day’s second session, Ivy-Jane Smith (Steel City) faced stiff competition in the form of Germany’s Maxi Klotzer, who won Best Female Fighting Performance at the World Boxing Cup: Cologne 2023.
Smith stood up to her German opponent and demonstrated calm despite persistent pressure, but ultimately succumbed to a unanimous decision loss.
The story of the day came from Burton Park’s Lauren Mackie, as she had a senior debut to remember with a 4-1 split decision victory over Denmark’s Melissa Mortensen.
Mackie was relentless in her game plan and landed some big backhands to leave the ring with a spring in her step.
Nine English boxers will take to the ring on the second day of the World Boxing Cup: GB Open 2024, with the morning session commencing at 11am and the evening session beginning at 5pm.
