Telford-based Wellington Boxing Academy has launched a fundraising page after severe weather conditions caused a pipe to burst and leave the club completely flooded.

The Just Giving page has a goal set to £8000 to help cover the cost of extensive repairs to the walls, floors, and ceilings.

They will also need to replace the boiler and damaged boxing equipment and have the electrics checked.

Club coach Harry Fiaz told BBC Radio Shropshire there was “a little bit of a drip from the ceiling” when he visited the gym on December 3rd.

He went on to explain that he thought he could hear rain a few hours later, before discovering that “the floor was all flooded and the ceiling looked like it was going to come through.”

The club has had dehumidifiers running non-stop since the flood, with coaches having to empty the buckets of water “two or three times a day.”

The temporary closure of the club is a huge blow to the community as well as the club.

Wellington provides classes to all ages and offers a safe environment to learn and grow through boxing.

They also have boxing fitness classes for the public, alongside general boxing sessions for vulnerable members.

The closure will also affect their regular Parkinson’s session, which provides physical and social benefits to individuals living with the disease.
