April 3, 2018 | by Gemma Field
The England Team features nine National Youth Champions and World Youth silver medallist Georgia O’Connor (Durham Community).
The competition kicks off on 18 April and finals will take place on 25 April.
The team has a good mix of athletes that have competed at the Europeans before alongside seven debutants who will be experiencing the competition for the first time.
Scunthorpe’s Gemma Richardson said: “This is my third European Championships and it’s still as exciting as my first. There is no better feeling than walking to the ring in my England kit with the England flag in front of me.
“I love being able to test myself with the very best girls in Europe. I have been lucky enough to medal in the last two years as a junior and now I will be trying my best to bring back another gold but this time as a youth.
“I am working really hard to make sure I am the best I can be. My training is going well and I am putting in the hours at the gym. I know that all of the England team have been pushing themselves hard on the Training camps. Come on #TEAMENGLAND”
Moss Side’s Conner Tudsbury added: “Going into this Europeans I feel really good and I am really excited. At the last one I felt I was a little inexperienced but now I have more competitions under my belt.
“I am going to use my experience and I know this one will be better. I have understood the importance of adapting to different environments and my training with my club and the England Boxing Talent camps has been better.”
Brooklands’ Paige Goodyear said: “I’m really happy to be selected for the European Championships and be able to represent England. I didn’t get picked last year so I was working hard to make sure I was on this year’s team.
“I’m training hard and I am determined because I want to make everyone proud of me.”
St Mary’s Karol Itauma commented: “Every time I’ve won the National Championships I wasn’t able to progress onto the international scene due to passport issues, however now two years later everything has been sorted.
“I’m preparing myself the best I can and grabbing this opportunity with both my hands so that I shine on the international stage… not only for myself but also for my family: friends, club and country…Matthew 19:26″
England Boxing Lead Coach Mick Driscoll believes this is a team full of potential that can take on Europe’s best.
“We have a strong team heading out to the European Championships that has a good mix of athletes,” Driscoll said. “I expect a professional and competitive performance from this team. I know they’re going to prepare well with the England Boxing coaches and their club coaches to make sure that they are all at their best when they get in the ring in Italy.”
