Men’s World Championships 2021, day one – Lambert bows out

Day one of the AIBA Men’s World Championships 2021 ended in disappointment for England as their first boxer in action, Harvey Lambert, fell at the first hurdle.
He lost out on a split 4-1 decision to the Russian Boxing Federation’s Evegenii Kool in what was an extremely close-fought but throughout.
The St Paul’s boxer made a bright start, working behind his jab and looking to counter the strong Russian when the opportunity arose, claiming it 3-2 on the judges’ scorecards.
He also edged the second by the same margin by keeping his opponent largely at bay, but the manner of the scoring meant the contest was level at 19-19 with four of the judges, with one of them having it 20-18 in his favour.
But it was not to be for Lambert as the Russian landed with some eye-catching shots in the final round to take it unanimously and with it book his place in the next round.
For 2019 National Amateur Championships winner Lambert it was a frustrating end to a promising display.
Tomorrow, England have Kiaran MacDonald (Under 51kg), Lewis Richardson (Under 75kg) Lewis Williams (Under 92kg) competing, with all three going in the evening session.
