Fighting for their Future: Southend ABC Call on Supporters
August 15, 2025 | by Chris Boyd
Southend ABC and Lifstan Boys & Girls Club are calling on support as they face uncertainty over their premises for future generations after vital funding was withdrawn.
Initial funding was provided by the Youth Investment Fund (YIF) and Social Investment Business (SIB) in 2023 to relocate the clubs to a purpose-built site. However, after progress was hampered due to contractor and timeline constraints, funds were withdrawn earlier this year.
The withdrawal has left the two clubs, which have supported generations of young people in Southend since 1913 and 1948 respectively, operating from a temporary site with significantly higher rent than their previous premises. Originally intended only as a short-term solution, the facility does not offer long-term security, with the lease running on a rolling monthly basis.
The club suffered a further setback after vandals targeted their original premises, with thieves stealing metal piping and damaging toilets, fire doors, and windows. Paint was thrown across floors and walls, carpets were ripped up, and furniture was destroyed.
In their now-trademark defiant style, both clubs came together on Saturday, 9 August, for a major clean-up which was supported by volunteers, local businesses, and community leaders.
The clean-up was attended by waste management, construction, and skip companies, as well as Councillor Matt Dent and Southend East and Rochford MP Bayo Alaba, showing the strength of local support for the clubs.
Committee member Danny Neville said: “They’ve smashed it (the premises) to bits. But the spirit of our community is strong, and we’re determined to fight for the future of these clubs.”
Southend ABC and Lifstan Boys & Girls Club are calling on clubs, coaches, boxers, volunteers, and supporters nationwide to support them with getting the project back on track, following a revised plan, budget and timeline, so that building work can proceed without delay. England Boxing will also be supporting the club in seeking a solution to ensure their doors can remain open for years to come.
