September 30, 2022 | by Chris Boyd
Team England produced a five-star performance on day four at the EUBC Junior European Championships in Montesilvano, Italy as all five competing girl boxers overcame their opponents to guarantee medals.
It was all hands on deck for the Team England coaches, as Ruby White and Alice Pumphrey were both scheduled to face off against their opposition in bout five of the afternoon session.
Ruby White’s under 48kg bout against Turkish boxer Nisanur Kokduman got underway first and the Sturminster Newton junior forced an eight count early in the first round.
White continued to control the contest as she set up a unanimous decision victory, easing Team England to their first guaranteed medal of the championships.
As the bout in ring B headed into the second round, Alice Pumphrey’s under 50kg bout against Salmeron Gutierrez of Spain got underway.
The Purge boxer was given a tough challenge by her opponent, but Pumphrey dug deep when needed and moved her way into the medal stages with a 5-0 scorecard.
Team England was again split across ring A and ring B as Keira Bowden and Ella Lonsdale competed simultaneously in bouts eight.
Redcar ABC boxer Kiera Bowden took on Greek boxer Ionna Kantzari in an under 52kg bout.
Bowden produced another controlled and composed display as Team England really grew into the championships.
The southpaw’s performance saw her pick out great shots to finish a clear 5-0 winner and secure another medal for the team.
Elsewhere, in ring A, under 54kg boxer Ella Lonsdale took on Gizbas Isgandar of Azerbaijan.
Ella was making her championship bow and she did so in style as the Sunderland East End boxer scored accurately with straight headshots throughout the bout.
A warning to the Azerbaijan boxer helped ‘Lightning’s’ cause, as Team England secured another guaranteed medal with a unanimous points win.
Last up on day four was Platinum Boxing’s Lilly Deacon.
The under 66kg boxer was also making her championship bow, up against Dilara Sak of Turkey in bout nine of the evening session.
The bout got off to a manic start and quickly transcended into an outstanding contest, with Sak piling on relentless pressure.
With the bout in the balance going into the last round, the English southpaw pulled out all the stops to take the session and win in a 4-1 split decision.
