The weekend’s boxing at Banbury – featuring the England Boxing National Youth Championships and Senior pre quarter-finals – will now take place behind closed doors, England Boxing can confirm.

After consultation with Thames Valley Police and other stakeholders, the England Boxing board has taken this decision in order ensure the event can go ahead.

The event is scheduled to run from tomorrow (Friday 26th November) to Sunday (28th November).

“We understand the disappointment and inconvenience this will cause for those who were planning to travel and watch the boxing live, but our first concern will always be the duty of care we have to boxers, coaches, volunteers, staff and other stakeholders, by ensuring an event runs safely,” said Chief Executive Officer, Gethin Jenkins.

“We continue to work in close liaison with the venue and the police and the decision to go behind closed doors was taken with an abundance of caution.

“After that, our next priority was to ensure that the boxing goes ahead, rather than the event being cancelled, particularly with the knock-on ramifications that has for the following weekends.

“In making this decision, the board felt it was better to stage the event behind closed doors, rather than have no boxing at all, thereby giving those boxers who have reached this stage the chance to box for a national title.”

Coaches should note that a maximum of three coaches will be allowed to attend per club and they must all wear a valid, in-date lanyard at all times, ready for inspection.

The only exception is if a club has five or more boxers competing at this event, in which case that club are permitted a maximum of six coaches with valid lanyards, as above.

No dispensation will be made for additional coaches under any other circumstances and no members of the public will be admitted to the event venue and boxing tournament whatsoever.

All bouts will be streamed live on the England Boxing YouTube Channel and you can see details of how to access bouts by clicking here.
