Brandenburg Cup 23: Day Three

Team England secured two gold medals and two silver on day three of the Brandenburg Cup in Lindow, Germany.

Amber Moss-Birch and Ellis Panter both secured gold via unanimous decision victories.

Moss-Birch won the over 81kg medal, defeating Sara-Lysiane Glaser of Germany, while Panter took gold in the Under 67kg category, defeating Mark Lomakin of Ukraine.

Lauren Mackie and John Tom Varey succumbed to finals losses, with both facing stiff opposition, but will ultimately bring home silver from Germany.

Mackie lost unanimously to Perla Bazaldua of the United States in Under 54kg action, while Varey also fell unanimously to Under 48kg Ukrainian Maksym Zymenko.

Joe Turner was one of five semi-finalists to take to the ring on day three. He faced Under 51kg opponent Emmanuel Chance of the United States and took his opponent all the way in a bout of the tournament contender but fell to a 3-2 split decision defeat. Turner will box on day four for third place.

Zayn Ahmed was set to box for a final’s day berth, but his German opponent withdrew through injury, ensuring Ahmed will be in action on day four.

Leighton Birchall and Hamilton Joyce were both able to secure at least a silver medal, which both boxers advancing via unanimous decision victories.

Birchall defeated Under 57kg Ukrainian Rasul Guliev, whilst Joyce scored the win over Under 60kg German Raphael Braun.

Leon Hughes was the last Three Lion boxer to be in action, but it wasn’t to be for long. Hughes advanced into the Over 92kg final after winning via second-round abandonment against Nikita Khokhon, with the Ukrainian’s coaches throwing in the towel.

Day four sees Team England compete in four finals and third place box-off, whilst John Tom Varey will be in action in a training bout.
