A total of 18 England Boxing-affiliated clubs have been donated boxing equipment used at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

They are all from the Midlands region where the games was based and it just one of the projects to securing a lasting legacy from the summer spectacular.

The giveaway has been made possible thanks to a link-up between Sport England, the Birmingham 2022 Organising Committee and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Almost 2,500 applications were submitted across the wide range of sports that formed part of the games, with 290 community groups successful in all.

‘Used by Commonwealth Games gold medallists’

“Only a few months ago, this equipment was being used by Commonwealth Games athletes and gold medallists such as Delicious Orie and Lewis Williams,” said Midlands Club Support Officer, Louise Vidor.

“It’s fantastic that this games legacy means the equipment is awarded to our Midlands clubs where it is much needed and will undoubtedly contribute to the success of our future boxing champions.”

Nicola Turner, director of legacy for Birmingham 2022, added: “This equipment was used by some of the best athletes in the world to break records and win medals – and now that kit will be in the hands of aspiring sporting superstars of the West Midlands

“This is legacy in action and shows the continued and real-time benefits of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.”

And John Steele, chair of Team England, said: “It’s an honour that the same equipment that helped England win medals is now going to be used by grassroots groups in the West Midlands.

“Getting active can transform lives and it’s amazing to see this equipment be put to such good use. It’s the Games legacy in action.”
