England Boxing’s Midlands apprentice, Joshua Jones, held a fundamentals of boxing class at Archbishop Ilsley School in Acocks Green last week.
Organising an event is the latest challenge faced by the England Boxing apprentices during their ongoing development and Jones took the opportunity to teach the basics to young people.
Those in attendance were shown how to throw a jab, backhand and defend along with other introductory actions.
“I hoped to get young people from low socioeconomic and ethnically diverse backgrounds and show them all the advantages that participating in boxing has to offer.”
The hope is that the session will encourage participation in boxing while attracting and retaining an interest in physical activity.
80 young individuals attended the session and Jones noted a positive attitude throughout.
“I’d like to congratulate them all for excellent behaviour during the event, and for making me and Louise Vidor (Midlands Club Support Officer) feel very welcome.
“I’d also like to thank Mr Loney (headteacher) for hosting my event on short notice and I look forward to delivering weekly outreach sessions in the future.”
