England’s Harris Akbar advanced to the semi-finals on day five of the EUBC European Under 22 semi-finals as team-mates Ramtin Musah and Joe Tyers bowed out.
Number one seed and Bradford Police boxer Akbar was in impressive form in Roseto, Italy as he saw off Ireland’s Kieran Molloy at Welterweight (Under 69kg) with a unanimous 5-0 verdict.
Akbar won all three rounds 10-9 on each of the judges’ scorecards and, with his opponent also being deducted a point by the referee, claimed a 30-26 victory across the board.
Beartown’s Musah was extremely unlucky not to progress at middleweight (under 75kg) after acquitting himself superbly well against Russian number one seed Nikita Voronov.
He lost on a 3-2 split decision despite his opponent being deducted a point by the referee, winning 29-27 on two scorecards with the other three judges scoring it even at 28-28 but adjudging the Russian to have held the upper hand.
Light-welterweight (Under 64kg) Tyers took on home boxer Matteo Ara and was up against it after dropping the first round unanimously on the judges’ scorecards.
The Darlington boxer hit back well to win the second round in the eyes of three of the five judges to leave the bout in the balance, but his Italian opponent sealed a unanimous victory by taking the third round 4-1.
