The Veterans Project by England Boxing

The Veterans Project is a 12-month journey over 46 weeks aimed at providing opportunities and a sense of belonging for our Veterans. The project uses Boxing to provide a space to rekindle the bond ex-servicemen and women sometimes lose when they leave the forces.

Throughout the programme, participants will build on their health, fitness, and well-being while they participate and excel in the sport of boxing.

Veterans Project FAQ

What does the Project consist of?

Weekly, 90-minute sessions across 46 weeks with each session providing an hour of boxing and 30 minutes of chatting over a hot drink. Each Veteran receives their own set of wraps and gloves before embarking on a project that provides a home, inclusivity, fitness and camaraderie.

Where does the Project take place?

The Veterans Project is delivered by dedicated England Boxing-qualified coaches who understand the importance of our Veterans at clubs which are already recognised England Boxing Inclusion Clubs.

Seven clubs currently deliver the Veterans Project, with each one serving up to 20 Veterans.

Project Lead – Ross Wilkinson

Ross Wilkinson visited boxing clubs in his youth, but it wasn’t until he joined the Army that he truly fell in love with the sport.

Ross completed his England Boxing Level One Coaching Course whilst serving and would not be involved with the sport now had it not been for everything he learnt during that time.

Since leaving the Forces, Ross has worked in several different careers but is now a full-time employee in boxing. He is the England Boxing Tyne, Tees and Wear Club Support Officer and has been an England Performance Pathway Coach since 2018.

Ross has several other roles in boxing including being a Northumbria University Coach, coaching professional boxers and running his boxing club – Tyneside Boxing Club.

After being appointed to head up the Veterans Project, Ross now looks forward to supporting our Veterans throughout the country alongside the clubs chosen to facilitate the project.
