Former student Horn gives DiSE advice

Former DiSE student Harvey Horn visited some of the current first-year boxers on the programme at the Spotlight centre in London recently to offer valuable insight and inspiration.
The ex-GB flyweight boxer and current WBO European champion gave advice and encouragement to the group as they started another day of technical work and planning.
DiSE is aimed at teenage boxers who have the realistic potential to achieve excellence in boxing, but who are keen to continue their education at the same time, with six centres across the country.
“ The scheme was called AASE when I was a student,” said Horn. “I really enjoyed my time on programme.
“I met some great friends and learned loads that helped me on GB later on, but I think the DISE programme was more valuable to me.
“It’s focused and gives the students a lot of extra support without stressing them out with too much paperwork.
“It’s ideal for young boxers who are looking to take it to the next step because it gives you an insight into what you would need if you have ambitions to progress onto GB.”
The current students were delighted to by the attendance of Essex-born southpaw Horn.
“It was really good to see Harvey,” said Vivien Parsons of Afewee Boxing Club and England. “He gave us some great tips on what it’s like to box on GB, telling us about areas it’s really important not to overlook, like flexibility and structured running programmes.”
West Ham Boxing Club and England pathway boxer Finley James was also impressed with some of the former GB boxers guidance.
He added: “Harvey was on GB for around three years and won medals in majors and boxed in WSB bouts, so he has direct experience of what is needed.
“He talked about the importance of the right preparation, good practice and not overdoing things. It was a really valuable few hours.”
Spotlight DiSE coach, Mark Collings, “Seeing Harvey doing so well at the moment is fantastic.
“He was one of our star students and offering to come back and pass on his advice is fantastic and a real asset to all of us involved on the course.”
