Couple inspired by Box In Mind Bitesize raise £1,270, as new session dates added

A couple inspired an England Boxing’s online Box In Mind Bitesize session have raised £1,270 for The Samaritans during lockdown.

John Dang, a Level Two coach, and Laura Leonard, who is hoping to take the Level One course soon, wanted to help the charity and spread the mental health awareness message after logging on to take part in our new 45-miute sessions, designed to offer support while face-to-face courses have been made impossible by the Coronavirus outbreak.

Both have been running Online Boxing Classes for the last three months after taking a career break to go travelling and returning to a UK lockdown.

Through their sessions, they have built a large community that has helped each other through the lockdown, both physically and mentally.

These links have now helped them raise a fantastic amount for Samaritans Central London – a charity they say is close to their hearts.

“After England Boxing’s Box in Mind course, we felt really inspired and like we wanted to spread more the mental health awareness message – especially during these times,” said Leonard.

“We have really felt that mental health has affected a lot of people around us, especially during the lockdown period and wanted to raise more awareness around this topic.

“After five days of campaigning we have felt a true sense of togetherness; we received many messages of encouragement and shared experiences across friends, family and clients. The message of “you are not alone in this” was felt throughout and words can’t express how heart-warming this felt.

“Both John and I want to continue our work with mental health awareness. Exercise, in our case boxing, has been a great vehicle to help people through the lockdown.”
